I can’t tell you how many times I have walked into a store, taken one look at the clothing racks, and walked right out the door again because I know they are not going to have anything in my size. Every time I am shopping for a trip or an event, I need to plan way ahead and shop online. If the shipment gets delayed, or the thing I ordered doesn’t fit correctly and I don’t have time to mail it back and exchange it, I’m improvising, or buying something I like less at Target. It’s 2024, and still only an estimated 8% of stores carry plus sizes. In other words, the 67% of American women over size 14 are served by 8% of all retail stores. Something has to change.
There are some fantastic, size-inclusive designers that I love ordering from. The plus-size fashion market is improving if you know where to look. But in addition to these online options, I want to have the option of walking into a store and trying something on. I want to see a dress I like in a boutique shop window, and not automatically assume that it’s not available in my size. I want a store where I can buy boutique-quality clothing, and not just more fast fashion. I can’t fix the entire industry, but I had the realization recently that I can do something, and perhaps something is better than nothing.
By the way, I’m Becca. By day, I’m a software engineer in Seattle. When I’m not writing JavaScript, I’m working on Open Weave.
Open Weave is partnering with size-inclusive wholesalers to sell boutique-quality clothing in Seattle. We love clothing that is made in the USA, fair trade, or ethically produced. We don’t have a permanent location yet, but by supporting Open Weave in these early stages, you can help to make that a reality.
A quick disclaimer…
While I’m using the language size inclusive clothing, I recognize that brands that go up to 3X are not truly size-inclusive. Most of the clothing I am stocking at the moment fits in this category. The selection of high-quality clothing over size 3X sucks, and I know it.
As I look for size-inclusive pieces to add to my inventory, I need some help! Do you know of any great wholesale sellers who sell high quality in sizes 4X and above? If so, I would love to get in touch.
How do I get involved?
- Subscribe to email. I promise not to spam you with marketing emails! This is the primary way to let you know when we have sales and local events. Plus, if you subscribe to emails I will send you a code that is good for 20% off any item you order online.
- Attend an event. I want to provide as many opportunities as possible for you to shop in-person. If you are in or around Seattle, come meet our community, try on some new looks, and get free styling advice.
- Shop online. By shopping online, you are supporting my mission to improve access to plus-sized clothing in Seattle. If you are nearby, I offer free local delivery!
I’m still at the very beginning of this journey, and my number one goal right now is meeting people who want a store like this one to exist. If you are one of them, please reach out to me on instagram or becca@openweave.co. I would love to meet you!
